Students build upon basic food preparation techniques in this Advanced Foods course. The involved recipes will include chopping, mincing, sautéing, frying, baking, garnishing, and more! Students will design meals and follow challenging recipes of International and Regional cuisines to produce nutritious and tasty dishes. “Cupcake Wars” and “Chopped” inspired events will showcase students’ growth and talent in the culinary arts as they demonstrate their skills to PHS faculty and student-body. Outside talent, such as professional Sushi Chefs, spend their time in the PHS foods room teaching students how to roll sushi with plenty of samples to go around. Recipes are always modified for vegetarianism, allergies/intolerances, and other dietary restrictions. Students will be busy preparing over 100 recipes in this full-year course; they will never leave the class hungry!
Introduction to Food Preparation and Nutrition
Students who take this full-year course practice introductory and intermediate food preparation skills and techniques. This is not just a baking class! Students will be preparing over 100 recipes including: chicken and meat dishes, fruits and vegetables, pizza and pastas, soups, and breakfasts in addition to cakes, candies, and pies. Students will excel at recipe- reading and teamwork and will participate in food competitions and events where they will cook to impress the faculty and student body! Nutritious food selections are emphasized in this class and recipes are always modified for vegetarianism, allergies/intolerances, and other dietary restrictions. At the end of this course, students will be proficient at using kitchen equipment and utensils and will have learned how to make real meals to feed their families and themselves.
